I have a 3 and half ton carrier central air that was installed in 2003. Since then, the first compressor was replaced in 2006, the next one 2010 so the third compressor is now in.
I am very disappointed in the unit. I called headquarters last year when the compressor went and I got nowhere about having a tech come out and check the unit out. No neighbors have had any of these problems.
I have a surge shield on the meter and they tell me that nothing is wrong with any surges so this leaves me to believe that it is within the unit that the problem lies. Today, no A/C again.
I have been on the phone with Cannon A/C & Heat and explained what we have been experiencing for the last week--smells like hot wiring. He thinks that by the sounds of it, it may be the fan motor.
Of course things happen on a week-end and the 4th of July is Monday so it can't be checked out till Tuesday. When I have to replace the unit, it will not be a Carrier unless I can get some real answers on this unit or have a tech come out and look at this unit.
I had the unit checked on May 24 and it appeared ok, although the equipment voltage was 247. I have a copy of the maintenance check list and all the results of the testing. The model # is 50zp042-311, serial # 2303g21521 ( I think that is a ag in the serial number but it could be a 6.)
