Is It Possible For Freon To Smell

by domenic

I have a 2 stage air and heating system. This is only the 2nd year I am using the central air conditioning and there is a very bad smell like rotten smell coming from the central air conditioner unit.

I had the coil cleaned and it still smells the same as before it was cleaned. Every time someone comes out and checks it I pay with no results. It is only two years old what can I do about it.

Is it possible for the Freon in a central air condition to smell moldy and rotten?

a/c smell NEW
by: Anonymous

I juts had new A/C installed and got that strange smell. I am retired Navy and Aviation so have just about smelled every known chemical to man, But I had tech, return and clean coils, as I know from experience they coat the coils with preservative. It worked out ok for a few days but smell is back, So that tells me its something to do with the manufacturing of Item compared to old style unit. The smell isn't making me sick and doubt it will , just annoying I am not going to keep bugging tech, but if it gets worse I will ask for a different brand unit to be installed before warranty closes. I know it isn't Freon I know that smell.,

New Freon STINKS !
by: rob

Hello?! Try process of elimination. All of the problems above indicate that the problems with the consistent, smelly sock musty smell when AC units startup is obviously not a mold or mildew problem. Most like myself have zero smell problems during heat season but only when AC starts up in spring. If there is mold, it would smell all the time. Notice also that people never had these problems this bad with older units. What does this tell you? The problem is the new refrigerents. I dont carew what the technicians say, the problem is the new refrigerents designed to replace the older freon that we never had these problems with. This is an industry problem that nobody wants to talk about. The gas becomes stagnant and absorbs contaminants in piping or other sources so when it runs, we suffer the odors. We need a massive recall!

Bad Motor NEW
by: Anonymous

I just replaced my squirrel cage motor,,, or the (((fan motor inside))) I had a terrible odder that started n it was coming up from the vents inside.... I discovered my fan motor was burning up n it really smelled bad.... I ordered a new motor and capacitor n it immediately fixed it.... The motor was $140.00 the capacitor was $10 then shipping but that was cheaper than a $3,000 new unit or about as much as the repair man coming n just charging for the visit n a cleaning... Good luck... n God bless

Capacitor could be burning. NEW
by: Anonymous

I had to replace the capacitor, and if I smelled that, it smelled just like the smell coming through the ducts.it had burned up, and they said that could ruin my air conditioner if I let it go. I smelled it again this year, and they replaced it, but said it tested good.???

Freon Does Smell
by: Dadan

This smell had only occur with your new central air conditioning unit correct? It didn’t smell with your previous central ac unit. You need to provide more information, so the reader could have visual image of the situation.

Does this smell spread out into the entire house or it smells in specific location? Where is your ductwork located? Is it in the attic or under the floor? Had the tech checks the ductwork for dead animal? Is there sewage vent near your air handler units? Yes, Freon does smell, but not moldy and rotten! This smell couldn’t come from your ac unit.
