Inside Fan Stays On When Compressor Goes Off

by Lorraine
(Bronx, New York)

Our York package unit is about 15 years old. We purchased the house with it.

At the suggestion of our maintenance company we had the contact switch replaced. As soon as that was done the fan would not turn off with the compressor.

Techs came back and said it was the thermostat, so that was changed, the problem still occurred. Techs came back again said now it is a relay switch to the fan.

Now we are waiting for them to get a part, since July 9. Fan was going off overnite when compressor went off, then would not go off after 8am.

What could this be, don't want to be misled by our ac maintenance company.

fan stays on NEW

Most units have a blower fan delay to allow the heated or cooled air to be pushed thru the vents after the compressor shuts down... this is to increase the efficiency for your unit.

inside fan stays on NEW

The inside fan stays on even when the compressor is off. We cut the electricity to the entire unit but the fan still runs continuously.

same Problem with my Unit but mine is Goodman NEW
by: Anonymous

the same issue with mine the fan inside does not turn off when I turn the AC off at Thermostat or when the desired Temp is reached. But the Compressor goes off when needed. Why does the fan stay on. I have to pull fuses to turn it all off but then I don't have any AC obviously.

Indoor fan stays on when it should be off NEW
by: Anonymous

I and several others have the same problem: the indoor fan stays on when it should turn off.
I have examined the schematic diagram of my York heat pump (model B1HH042) and I find the control interface design to be marginal. Specifically, if a controller input (in my case terminal G which controls the indoor fan) is supposed to be OFF, then all that happens is that the connection to 24VAC is removed. So the entire wire from the thermostat terminal G to the fan motor controller terminal board is "floating", meaning NOTHING is connected to that wire. So, for example, even a high impedance spurious trace on the controller board running from the 24VAC supply to terminal G can raise this voltage to the point where the fan is commanded ON. A lousy design, or so it appears. When G voltage should be OFF it should be GROUNDED, not left floating.

As a first "fix" I plan to connect a 5K resistor between terminals G and C (C is ground or common) which shouldn't be an excessive load for the 24VAC transformer yet will hopefully reduce the spurious OFF voltage at terminal G to below the turn-on threshold.

I have the same issue on a heat pump
by: Gary

I have a 4.5 ton York heat pump that was installed in 1987 when the house was built. From the beginning, the outside unit (compressor) would shutdown after about 45 minutes of running, but the air circulation fan would continue to run.

We have the original thermostat also which blinks a code and according to the manuals we got withthe system, there must be either a timer or temperature shutoff on the compressor to protect it.

Out problem is if the AC was off on a hot day or when we come home from vacation, the house won't cool off within 45 minutes so it would shutdown. What I learned to do is just setthe thermostat 2 degrees below what is was when I turned the AC on and it usually drops the temp 2 degrees within 45 minutes and it shutsdown on temperature. I them lower the thermostat another 2 degrees and continue doing that until I get to my desired temperature. Obviously I have to start this long before I go to bed, otherwise I hit the curse of 45 minutes.

I had York trained and other AC techs come out over the years and none knew of a way to change the timer if that's whats causing my problem. If it is a true temperature shuutoff, I'd rather it shut down that bun out the motor.

I had the R22 topped off this summe (only 2nd time in 24 years) and the tech said the unit temps, delta temp and pressures were all good.

I just don't understand the shutoff issue.

Indoor Fan Stay On

I'm guesses your hvac tech had check if the relay is good or bad. From what I had read I would go for the relay next.

inside fan stays on
by: Anonymous

The fan is on when the thermostat is on cool and the fan is on automatic. The compressor shuts when the room reaches the temperature but the fan does not go off.

I do not have a wire diagram. We asked the tech if the contact switch could have been wired wrong, they say it has nothing to do with the fan, that we most likely need a new relay switch, would you agree?

Inside Fan Run Nonstop
by: Dadan

Let me get this right, as soon as the contact was replaced for the condenser fan and the compressor. The blower motor would not shut down?

Does this occur, when the thermostat is on cooling mode? It could be the fan relay or a limit switch. A wire diagram picture would be awesome.

I hope I answer some of your question.
