Do Not Buy Rheem Central Air Conditioner

by Consumers
(Miami, FL)

Installed a brand new central ac unit (outside + inside) less than 2 years. Already have a broken Fan and no Freon.

COST of REPAIR ALMOST US$ 300.00 labor. Old unit NOT a Rheem, was running smooth for 10 years and never had any problem, has to be replaced after Building HOA repair the roof and all had to meet new building codes.

I trusted the contractor and installed this GARBAGE RHEEM unit. Close to 2 yrs already broken. DO NOT BUY RHEEM. Listen to this, it's the only thing I can do now after spending money on this brand - DO NOT BUY RHEEM. DO NOT BUY RHEEM!

Rheem a Lemon NEW
by: Anonymous

2024, July, Louisiana. I guess we've had 5 or 6 major issues including replacement of faulty parts with our new Rheem central a/c we got 2 or 3 years ago. And it wasn't cheap. It hurts me to think of how much we paid for it, actually. I can't think of everything that's gone wrong, which includes at least one thing that's had to be replaced twice, but now, a new issue that wasn't supposed to happen----drain clogged. We weren't supposed to have to drop drain cleaner in it every month, on this unit, like on the old one that lasted 25 years and wasn't a Rheem. Now I know why our new wood floor next to the unit, has been starting to ripple slightly. Great. I don't recommend Rheem, btw. If they ever were good, they're not now.

Now at 2.5 yr of owner ship the supply service line TXV valve has blown out on the back side according to the tech. warrenty on valve but 1400.00 labor to replace 4x 350.00. and 700.00 to recharge system. thinking of switching to Goodman or Carrier, what say thee....

Wish I had read these comments before… NEW
by: Debra H

Our Rheem air conditioner condenser stopped working after just 4 years. And it didn’t prove very efficient prior to that —cost several hundred dollars a month to run in the summer, even though we only need to turn it on in the early afternoon and almost never run it at night. The condenser is under warranty but the first estimate I got for the labor to replace it was $2500. (Ultimately, the original contractor agreed to do the job for the "bargain" price of $1000. Really !!???) Now we’ve waited over a week for the part to arrive in sweltering temps over 100 degrees. Our old Lennox air conditioner lasted 30 years. Pre-China parts, I guess. I’m so very sorry I was talked into buying this piece of junk and wouldn’t purchase one ever again. Smart homeowners spend more and get quality. Rheem is no longer that.

As bad as a old feaders rotary NEW
by: Anonymous

Rheem use to be one very good product. But not anymore. They have nothing but inferior materials and parts made in china. They even sell multi position air handlers and deliberately leave the horizontal drain pans out of them. So you don’t get the horizontal drain pan when you by the unit. If your installers don’t notice it you then end up with a big problem. Then they tell you that your unit comes set up in upflow configuration and you would have to buy horizontal drain pan separately. Well then that is not a true multi position air handler. All other manufacturers units come with both drain pans in them. If you are a contractor do yourself a favor stay away from Rheem before you get rheemed

Rheem HVAC Cheap Contractor Garbage NEW
by: Anonymous

Don't be fooled by people who tell you Rheem HVAC systems are great. Maybe 25-30 years ago but anything after 2000 is crap. Rheem systems are notorious for FREON leaks and internal corrosion. You'll be lucky to get 10 years out of it. They are very expensive, even more to keep running by recharging the leaked FREON at $500 per occurance. We don't buy anything Rheem because we got Rheemed already.

Do Not Buy Rheem
by: Anonymous

In 2015 i had a Rheem 4 ton heat pump installed.it has broken down once or twice a year since installation. It's always something major like blower motors, condensor fan.blown evaporator coil, blown condensor coil and so on.It came with the 10 year parts warrenty but i have to pay for labor and freon.this weekend it blew the condensor coil again and i had enough and we are having it replaced. The labor and freon costs are draining me.It;s sad when a new product starts breaking down out of the gate and i am getting a consumer affairs atty and filing suit against Rheem because even though they had the parts warrenty it was always fixed with the same cheap defective part and Rheem knew it would only break again.I am not a rich person nor a super smart person but i'm not stupid and i know when i have been ripped off and i will not back down.

Most of these comments should be directed at contractor.
by: John R

I've been a Rheem contractor since 1979. Like all manufacturers, the transition years ago to 410A caused Rheem coils to leak and was a bad period because I could not sell reliable equipment, but Rheem transitioned from copper to aluminum on their evaporator coils and they have been GOLD ever since. They use Copeland top of the line compressors, and Emerson controls, the best. I have virtually no problems with them or I would not sell them, and in Houston, we sell a lot. The problems described in this post are related to improper installation, and that is a contractor problem. Seek out a licensed, qualified contractor, there are way too many fake companies out there. Price should not be your number one concern.

Rheem - Buyer Beware!! NEW
by: Anonymous

We got our our whole AC unit replaced last summer 2021. Months after we got it, we had issues with our coil freezing up. Technician said it could be the filter and had to be replaced frequently. 1 year later, our AC broke again in the summer! The technician said it was Freon leaking and took care of it. Didn’t work. Found out it was the coil was the issue. Had to get replaced. Technician tried to get Rheem to just replace the unit because it was going to take a month to replace the coil. Only thing the did for us was give us free shipping. But still had to pay for labor to replace the coil. You would think that after paying $9k for a brand new AC unit, you would not be expecting to have your AC break again in the middle of summer! We had to pay another $700 for labor to fix their faulty part!!!! I am sure it could have been more had they not cover for shipping. 1 week after fixing the coil, our AC stopped blowing cold air. Will have to call our technician to come again to check as we speak. Rheem should pay for labor! This is such a terrible product. From looking at the comments, looks like another class action lawsuit should be started again!! They should not be allowed to be in business! Shame on them!! No matter how long you wait, buy something other than this junky product!

Rheem nas NO Customer Service!! They SUCK! NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased a top of the line Rheem 16 Seer 2 Stage Heat Pump unit. It was installed in November of 2018. Here we are just 2.5 yrs later, and in February of 2021 had to have the control board replaced, the Defrost control board and a censor replaced. They also replaced the Honeywell Thermostat.

Well, yesterday June 6th 2022, the unit quit blowing cold. Now it is starting to get hot in AR. My contractor that we ended up firing used this local company for purchase and install. They were total CLOWNS!

The Tech installed the new digital thermostat and handed me the user Manuel, and said, "You will need to read this to operate it, because I don't understand all this new technology stuff."

They are no longer allowed on my property! So the selling dealer is of NO USE.

I called a new service company out to diagnose the problem. They said that the Reverse valve is leaking, and all the refrigerant has been lost. This is a factory intalled part!! So the factory part is defective, and that part made me lose all my R410A, and Rheem stays this is NOT covered. So the quote for repairs is $1,761.00, and Rheem will only cover the $168.00 part. This is NOT acceptable on a new unit like this!

I will be calling my attorney, to begin a lawsuit, if anyone else would like to join me!

Manufacturers Weld Leak (9 Month Old System)
by: Thomas Bowman

Rheem refused to stand behind their HVAC system sold to use with a 10 year warranty! We had to sue the installer and then just after they were released the system broke for a second time losing its coolant completely. We were shocked to see that there are hundreds if not thousands of consumers who have had similar issues with Rheem. Here is a video to our complaint and we recommend you make your own complaint video and link it in the comments everywhere Rheem is!

We are interested in a class action lawsuit and bringing this company to justice!

I have a 47 year old house with a made in the USA Rheem heat pump AC system. It just died, after 47 years. That fact made me buy a new Rheem heat pump AC system. The technician completed the installation, turn the system on, lots of cold air. Fantastic. The next day the air handler would not come on but the condensing unit worked fine. The technician just left, he had not a clue why the made in China air handler motor did not run. He by passed everything, ran 240 volts direct to the NEW motor and it wouldn't run. Tomorrow he's going to the local Rheem dealer to get a new motor! DO NOT BUY RHEEM EQUIPMENT, EVER!

Rheem hvac is crap NEW
by: Anonymous

Had an 18 year old carrier unit only had serviced two times in its life. Bought a Rheem because hvac guy said it was a good brand. It will be two years old next month and today was the 6th service call. Now I’m told it’s leaking refrigerant and it will cost almost $1500 or more. Hvac man recommends dumping it for a quality unit. It’s had computer board, valve and dryer already replaced on past service calls now it’s leaking. What a piece of crap. So after two years I now have to swap out entire unit for a new one. if I fix it again how long before the next breakdown and how many thousands do you put into something you spent thousands on two years ago when purchased. By the way did I mention this thing is a piece of crap and sadly at the save time I bought a Rheem hot water heater. I will never buy another Rheem product and will tell everyone I can how much money, time and aggravation this pos has caused me. I don’t know how they are still in business.

contractor-installed Rheem unit was replaced at 9-year mark NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased a 3-year-old home that had a Rheem HVAC unit installed by the contractors during construction. I don't know the history of the unit that occurred prior to my purchase. However, the first year that I used the unit, it never seemed to cool or heat to my liking. With a service maintenance agreement for twice per year inspections, I was told that the equipment was in good shape, functioning properly, and there was no identifiable reason that the heating or cooling would not be appropriate. Two years later, a different HVAC maintenance company shared the same information after their routine inspections: There was nothing that should prevent proper heating and cooling. However, despite these good inspections, the house was never comfortable. By the 9-year mark, the coils began to rust and ultimately, freon leaked from the system. The compressor failed. Repairing the system at $3000 would have been not much less expensive than entirely replacing with a comparable unit of another brand. I decided to replace the unit. Being a long-term home owner in a different location, I expected that the unit should have given me at least 15 years of service. This experience of having the replace a Rheem after only 9 years of service taught me the lesson of completely staying away from that brand.

Since day 1, I have had problems with this brand new unit. 1st day, August after install from pros, AC not cooling, cool air, running all the time. Now winter, heat not heating. I have had several techs here to check this--no answers, just costly service call--7 infact. Called Budget Air, Tampa and complained since day 1.Sorry, that's no our responsibility. I will not even try calling Rheem, many have complained. I would not place the problems with Budget AC, but I think they should get me a new NON-RHEEM unit Waiting results now. My installers told me not to buy a Rheem, but since I had the older R-22 that lasted 24 years with minimal service, figured it would be the same quality---WRONNG-BAD UNITS PERIOD. They told me they will never sell, or install a Rheem unit again-They are junk. DO NOT EVER EVEN THINK ABOUT BUYING A RHEEM UNIT--IT WILL MAKE YOU SICK,STRESSED,OVER YOUR LOSS.

Rheem -No Support, Never Again NEW
by: DougM

My Rheem Prestige A/C was installed on 12/23/2016. During the first year under warranty there was more then a dozen service calls. The Compressor was replaced and the indoor fan motor was replaced 2 times. The indoor evaporator has leaked water since day 1 and that problem has never been resolved. I still get a variety of alarms frequently.

The A/C service guys blamed it on bad power. My power is the 1st connection on the transformer, it is 200 Amp service, measures at 240 VAC, and an electrical inspection by the power company certified the power as normal.

The previous A/C was a Trane installed 12/20/1999 and only had 2 service calls during its 17 years of service. The Rheem A/C is in the same location as the previous Trane.

The A/C condensing unit is in a shady place on a concrete pad located on the West side of the structure. The Evaporator is located in a 2 1/2 car garage. The location is Broward County Florida.

Now, 12/07/2018, the indoor fan motor was replaced again, it came with a 30 day warranty, and that cost me a $290 labor fee.

When I complained to Rheem they said it wasn't their problem, take it up with the dealer. Apparently Rheem sells their product to a distributor who sells it to the dealer. They distance then selves from the product and don't offer any assistance.

My opinion: DO NOT BUY any Rheem product or any product related to Rheem.

Don't buy a rheem NEW
by: Anonymous

Package heat pump that loses it refrigerant in the winter will not be noticed because it will go into emergency heat. The scroll compressor will keep running till it locks up, that will trip the main breaker or fuses in the unit. Only then will the home owner call because of no heat. At that point the 410a unit will be full if green scum. Don't try and fix the unit it is destroyed. All the replaced coils will not fix it. Take a picture of the green scum in the unit and request a new unit. That is the only fix all others will not work.

Beware of Rheem mulit speed A/C and Heat pump NEW
by: Anonymous

I was a Rheem dealer in our area. Our company policy is for five years we will cover the cost of any warranty labor. We have been a long time Coleman dealer and have only had to honor that policy a couple of times. We have Coleman units out there that have been running for decades and have never had any warranty issues. Rheem at one time was a quality unit but they are more interested in profit then reliability. Our company installed several of their Presitge variable speed Heat pumps. One of which came in with new parts that had to be installed on it before we could even install it. Right then and there I knew we were going to be in trouble by backing Rheem. We as a company continue to honor our five year warranty policy. It is not our customers fault that Rheem has no quality and we don't feel right about forcing them to pay us for manufacturers problems. So we currently have a lawyer working on getting back over 15K in lost warranty revenue and we will "NEVER" sell another Rheem product!. Do your self a favor and take heed of this from a once Rheem dealer.

Had Rheem Prestige Unit installed in May,2013. Have had numerous problems with compressor lines (copper) leaking and have had compressor coil unit replaced because of leaks. Compressor motor started rusting and have service contract but company refuses to replace motor and said rusting is "normal". I am concerned that motor will rust through and fail, then I will be in the middle of summer with no AC and wait 3 days for repair. Unit is manufactured in Mexico, where my opinion quality control standards are lax. Bottom line if I had the choice again I would not purchase a Rheem!!!!

Bought a Rheem Prestige in summer of 2010 for approximately $6,400 after rebates. Presently I'm waiting for a condenser to be installed. This will be the second replacement for a total of 3 condensers in less than 8 years. The coils have been replaced from copper to aluminum. Freon corroded part of the Freon line to cause it to leak. Electronic board needed to be replaced. Blower fan needed to be replaced. Coil expansion part needed to replace the replacement one. To be fair at this time the parts have been under warranty but not the labor. After the "new" condenser is installed the labor costs will approach approximately $3,500 for a $6,400 unit installed new less than 8 years ago not to mention the number of days with no a/c/.

3) 3 yrs Heater fuses kept blowing, defective fuses, replacements were larger

4) Evaporator went 1 week prior to end of 5 yr warranty. Replaced free but stil lhad to pay for service and install charge. (Should hagve been recalled at No Charge.

5) 6th year, unit needed to be slightly recharged, they could not find the leak but noted that outside coils were not in the best of shape.
Told me to keep rinsing them off.

6) 7th year Unit not cooling, Where Suction line going into outside compressor, that valve was leaking and had to be cut out.

7) 3 months later, 7th year, copper coils on compressor disintegrating, has tiny pin holds that were very hard to detect. Quoted Replacement cost 1995.00.

8) Dealer said that wilt try to give break on replacement as much as possible but to call up Rheem and see if they can do anything. Copper is thin and may be Chinese... Oh Great, took about true crap...

Rheem AC JUNK DONT BUY ONE NEW
by: ERIC S.

Rheem’s Defective Air Conditioners, Warning, DONT BUY ONE! Every year I have at least one breakdown sometimes multiple breakdowns in a year’s time. I had to replace the blower motor the 2nd year in service. That started the nightmare with Rheem. Like others have said, the fan motor has to be ordered, due to it being a special fan condenser motor that cost $750; so none of the service companies want to stock them. The 3rd year I had a refrigerant leak in a copper line to the evaporator coil, so again another service call for that leak/repair with a complete refrigerant recharging of the sealed system. The next year the evaporator coil leaked, and had to be replaced. Again, another two service calls replacing the coil with a new one and another refrigerant recharging. Now the unit is out of warrantee for parts and the same coil replaced went bad (less than a year in service) and Rheem refuses to warrantee the coil they supplied me less than one year ago........These coils must be made in China and made with recycled copper. The copper coils are extruded and stretched so thin, that they can’t withstand the R410 low refrigerant pressures.... Don't try to call technical services at the Rheem’s headquarters. They will not speak to a homeowner/customer. They refer you to your local service company, many of the service owners have no idea what issues any one Rheem unit might have unless they experience units with the same problem over a period of years. Now, most of the service companies I have spoken to say Rheem AC units are known for their breakdowns. There is a class action suit against Rheem for their air conditioners, with the lawsuit stating Rheem knew about the bad coils they installed in their AC’S and did nothing about it. I am now purchasing a new AC system for my home after only 6 years and I will never purchase another Rheem product of any kind in the future. I will advise everyone to avoid Rheem AC products like the plague! DON’T BUY A RHEEM AC!

Rheem means Run NEW

Run away from anything that say Rheem on it. I have heat pump that's not very old and I've spent thousands on repairs. I can't get any answers from Rheem why this thing is such a pos. So here's my anti Rheem plan. I own and operate my own semi truck and trailer. My truck and trailer is seen by hundreds of thousands of people each day. I drive otr. I'm going to cover the sides of my trailer with anti Rheem advertisement . I know this won't make my rheem junk heat pump work any better but it's sure going to make me feel better. Who knows maybe I can save some folks from buying rheem products.

Rheem NEW
by: Anonymous

Both our units are a little over three years old. Evaporator coils on both units have corroded and caused refrigerant to leak out of them. We had to pay repair man for labor, to add refrigerant and additives as well as to seal the coils for leakage. Why are Rheem's customers forced to pay for defective evaporator coils that Rheem has been selling for years? Why is Rheem not forced to recall these defective products and reimburse customers for parts and labor for replacing these defective evaporator coils made of copper that are susceptible to corrosion?

Con Job on Rheem NEW
by: Jupiter, Fl

I paid almost $5K for a new Rheem and the second year I had it, just as Labor warranty went out, the unit sprung a coolant leak in air handler. CMI, advised the parts are covered but not their labor, although they sold and installed the unit. Now to get A/C is going to cost me an additional $800, covering the fault isolation and install of new handler. Is this a pattern for generating higher income for the A/C companies? If Rheem is this bad, why sell it? I certainly would not have purchased it had I known.

Rheem Airconditioners from Budget Air Supply NEW
by: Anonymous

HI,
I bought two 2.5 ton A/C compressors and air Handles from BUDGET AIR SUPPLY OF FLORIDA. The first unit purchase was flawless, a year ago. The second unit 1 month ago BUDGET AIR SUPPLY OF FLORIDA shafted meow of the FREE thermostat. No biggie, except its an odd electrical connection 6 wires Common, and will NOT work with any other thermostat!. They never provided thermostat. They only charged me when the circuit boar new was defective- on warranty. When both Dc motors went last week they voided my warranty with Rheem. Raheem will not deal with you! You have to go to the seller!
BUDGET AIR SUPPLY OF FLORIDA is crooked as hell, and run by an idiot with the mind of a 16 year old.
BUDGET AIR SUPPLY OF FLORIDA is horrible, but Rheem may not be any better, as they will not honor their warranty! Further no one has their parts!

Both new units less than 3 years old and have to replace the coils on both and add the refrigerant, I am not happy, I have an older model that I have had for about 10 years and no problems. If Rheem does not warrant parts and labor in future do NOT buy them, I am just finding out I have to pay for the labor on both units. Boycott Rheem until they give a better warranty plus labor cost on their units...

rheem was a great ac unit NEW
by: Anonymous

Th problems came up after they started making them in Mexico. Most manufacturers are having trouble with the new r410 because it has to have a higher pressure to do the same job. Imagine if your tires were required to be inflated to 80 psi instead of 32. Blame the cheap labor and poor quality of made in mexico and the government required r410.

Rheem Central air unit junk.. NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased a new home in Micco FL and the A/C company installed a Rheem central air/heat unit in August 2011. It has had the evap coil replaced 2x so it is on it's 3rd in 3 years (counting the original)and it just crapped out again, less than 8 months after being installed. Contacted Rheem last time an they passed the buck to the dealer. They didn't want to talk to me! Service is as bad as the unit. I would rate it as zero if it was an option. DON'T BUY RHEEM!

Less than one month old broken 3 times NEW
by: Anonymous

Had an 12 year old R-22 2 ton with air handler in the attic. Had to replace fan motor outside for 350 on 4/11 then on 6/02 had to have refrigerant added for 180. It cooled great but coils leaking in handler so HVAC dealer suggested time to replace. The new 2 ton Rheem R410A shutdown after 3 days due to water overflow switch in attic. The next week head pressure caused it to shut down again. It has never cooled like the old system and we were lucky to get below 80 when it was 90 outside. Now it has stopped cooling completely and seems to be out of refrigerant. Luckily the old Trane unit is keeping the downstairs cooled.
The dealer has a great reputation and is very responsive but the quality control in Mexico leaves much to be desired.

Rheem problems NEW
by: Anonymous

I'm. A Rheem dealer in Miami & broward , 99% of customers ask for rheem , rheem was a good unit but now they have a lot of problems with ( blowers x13 motors , condenser fan motor in 15, and 16 seer units, some 4 and 5 ton condenser units leaks freon and the( TXV )no working properly . Now they replace the X13 blower motor with a US Motor brand only time will tell but the rest of the unit still a pour quality ac made in Mexico . (soon they will come with aluminum coils inside). GOOD Luck With that
If you are in a market for a new ac think twice before buy a Rheem system

Rheem parts made in Mexico NEW
by: Anonymous

I purchased a Rheem ac and it has been nothing but trouble.
Rheem has been manufacturing their parts in Mexico and they just don't work.
The motor died in the first year and the coil started leaking freon.
I have had the motor and the coil replaced so now we will see how it works. This has become a major problem for the company.
Maybe you should have stuck to Made in America Rheem...
Now the labor cost you saved should be costing you plenty in
Replacing these broken systems...
I should be sending you my outrages electric bills that I received from trying to cool my home down with the broken system...
Guess what Rheem, you get what you pay for....

BE ADVISED
by: Tucson

Just 3 years ago I had Tucson Heating and Cooling ( A Division of Tucson Appliance L.L.C. )install my new Rheem AC/Heat System.

MY old Rheem system lasted 32 YEARS !!!!! During that time ... I did have to replace the compressor just one time. ALL the fans were still running when I replaced the system, thats why I purchased a new Rheem system.

Guess what ? ...The condenser fan failed !!

Have been waiting three weeks now ( NOT A STOCKED ITEM at dealer level I am told) for a new replacement fan. God forbid what I will have to pay for labor and have been informed by the dealer that I will also have to pay ALL shipping cost from factory to dealer.

Based on the above, it appears to me that the factory considers this item as a NOT A STOCK ITEM as well.

As they say ..."they just dont make em' as they use to"

As a known issue ... I feel Rheem should pay for ALL costs and keep NEW replacement fans IN STOCK !!!!!!

Finally ... DONT BY A RHEEM ... as they dont seem to stock replacement parts .

Nuff said.

Universal Air and Heat with a defective Rheem Fan Motor Made in Mexico
by: SIM

Universal Air and Heat has installed for me a new A/C unit($5640) in my garage in 2010(September). In Mars 2012, the fan Motor stopped working and the Universal Air and Heat has proposed to changed it but I have to pay $400 for the labor.

Very disappointed, my old unit since 2000 has never gave me problems. I have decided to change in 2010 to save and for clean energy. The Universal technician has said that MY TYPE OF Rheem fan motors were defective and Rheem is now replacing them.

My question to Universal Air and Heat is why are you charging $400 to replace a defective part you have installed?

If you are in Miami/Broward and has this same problem please let us make Universal replace all these defective fan Motors for free.

Problem with Rheem Fan
by: Eileen H

As far as cooling when it was working it was just fine. We have had our central ac unit for six years and the fan has been replaced three times. Now that is the fan that came on it plus three more. We just recently had to replace again.

Now once we had to pay the cost of installing the replacement fan. The last two times, we were not charged for the cost of installing. We are very frustrated, but what can we do. They certainly have not offered to replace the central air unit.

I guess we got a lemon. Our home in the mountains has a Trane with a ten year guarantee on parts and labor. We can't just replace this unit. This is not a small purchase. Will we get another Rheem; I don't think so.

by: Anonymous

bought this central air unit on advice of my air conditioner sales people. I paid 7259.00 for this product and the second year had to replace the fan motor, on which the parts were covered but not the labor ($200.000 ouch).

NOW i am on the third year and the upstairs temperature is 89 degrees and is now blowing hot air. Sounds like a similar problem and no air conditioner man available until Monday.

My old air conditioner ran for 10 to 15 years without a problem. Very UNHAPPY with this rhaam unit.
