Continued Problems With Trane AC

by Mary B
(Flower Mound, Texas)

I had a NEW Trane heating and cooling system installed in 2003. Within the first 6 months, I had to have 3 service calls on the central air conditioning units.

In 2005 the Start Capacitor broke and had to be replaced. In 2008 the central air units had to be recharged. In July of 2009 the Compressor and Variable Speed fan had to be replaced.

Although the compressor was still under warranty, labor was $700, and the variable speed fan was out of warranty so that was an additional $315. (The repair company felt sorry for us and didn't charge us labor for installing the fan.)

In October 2010, the central air conditioner quit running again. A couple of parts were replaced and the ac system was recharged. On May 28, 2011, the compressor quit running again - and tripped the circuit breakers.

What fun it was to go all holiday weekend with no central ac system and outside temps of 95+. The service man is coming today. If I could, I'd replace the Trane system with a more reliable one.

I expected more from a $9000 ac system installed 8 years ago. I am extremely disappointed in the quality of Trane. Take my advice - DON'T BUY A TRANE SYSTEM!

Trane Wreck

I have a similar $11,700 "top of the line" system that can only be described as a "Trane Wreck." The problems are too numerous to mention. My advise? Don't.

Worst POS's ever
by: Morgan

Bought their 2 ton and 5 ton, top of the line Trane machines, high efficiency, all the bells and whistles back in 2016. I have not gone a single 3 month period since where they are not here fixing it and some error code they cannot track down or ID. Get the extended warrantee and the highest service plan offered as you are going to need it. Talking to a neighbor builder he said he had the same exact problem with their top of the line High Efficiency units and as soon as his extended warrantee was up, he had them removed and put in the entry level Rheem and has never been happier! That swill be me on 2026!

I will not buy another Trane. NEW
by: Anonymous

I had a Carrier electric heating and air conditioning system for 18 years. It was supposed to last several years less. Further, any repair costs were relatively minor. The system failed in the summer of 2020 and the repair costs would have been significant.

My hvac company provided 3 replacement options, 1 Carrier and 2 Trane. I was told Trane was reliable and we selected Trane.

Due to Covid, we had to wait about 2 weeks for delivery. Our hvac company thankfully provided window units to help alleviate the humid summer weather.

The hvac company spent most of the day assembling the air handler in the basement and then the outside unit. At the end of install, I was told that the compressor in the outside unit was not working. A full outside unit was ordered, not just the compressor.

It took another 5 days to receive the brand new outside unit. Upon install, guess what? The compressor did not work.
I called my hvac company and requested they take back the air handler and outside unit and replace it with a Carrier. The hvac owner called me and said Trane would provide a new outside unit but would provide an upgraded model at no extra charge. I agreed.

I need to note that I used the hvac company for over 20 years. They have been professional, timely and reasonably priced.

So, another few days pass and the new, upgraded unit was replaced and it worked.

Fast forward to May 2021. The first time I turned on the AC for this season, it did Not work. The hvac company told me the compressor was not working. They ordered a new one that took 5 days to arrive. The hvac company started to replace the compressor but told me that Trane sent the wrong compressor unit. Trane sent the correct compressor the next day. It was the right unit and the air is now working.....for now.

I will never buy another Trane.

Trane H/C NEW
by: Mary

We purchased a Trane HVAC system 4 years ago and have had 5 service calls so far. Today, guess what, we have to make a call for another service call and we are definitely NOT calling the company that installed this. I will tell everyone we know, DON'T buy a Trane! We should have kept our old dependable Armstrong unit.

People read your warranties NEW
by: Anonymous

Most companies have 10-12 year warranties on parts and only 1 year labor. The systems need to be registered after install or the warranty reverts to the base warranty of something much less!
To get your labor portion extended past the 1 year it is a purchased option!
Noticed most of the complaints were focused on paying labor to fix the issues, reason being no one extended their labor portion and did not read the equipment warranty! No the fault of the manufacturer!

All Brands Have Bad Reviews! NEW
by: Soni

Ok, I am a Technician and also State licensed. I will give a little different view of common problems. First, keep in mind that all equipment will break Period! Quality installations will reduce problems significantly, but a home owner does not know what a quality installation really is and neither do a lot of companies. Quality installs take two parties, one who will really do it and the home owner who will also do their part, by upgrading their duct system to meet the airflow specs these new systems are designed for or other recommendations made by a hopefully competent sales rep who really knows his ass from a hole in the ground. Yes these things do cost more but it is crucial. When a home owner can't upgrade their duct system, components like blowers and compressors life are shortened, then the HVAC company gets the bad rap. On the flip, when a poor install takes place the consumer gets the short end of the stick. Keep your maintenance up to keep your warranty good, upgrade the duct system if needed, keep your filters changed, do your homework on the local install companies. Even with a great install, a great company and a homeowner who does everything right, things are still going to happen. I mentioned duct work because that is the most common culprit but there are many other things like: line set issues, additions, location (attic, crawlspace issues) etc. Just giving some insight and hope it's helpful.

Trane XL20i NEW
by: Anonymous

bought an XL20i 6 years ago and it has started having problems. Interestingly, 4 technicians from Albemarle Heating and Air in Charlottesville, VA. told me these were found to be defective, fraught with problems etc. When I called the company, they disputed what the technicians said. I will never buy another Trane nor will I ever buy anything from Albemarle Heating and Air agaom

2.5 years and she's broken NEW
by: Anonymous

Bought a Trane 2.5 years ago had the handler and thermostat replaced as well. Power flickered a few weeks ago during a thunderstorm. System acted like it was functioning but wasn't cooling. By the time the install company called me back it had started cooling again. Last night we had another thunderstorm, power was out for less than 5 seconds and the Trane stops again! After the tech came out, he informs us that, YES we have an equipment warranty that will pat to replace the evaporator coil but not the 1500$ in labor. Add to that that the install company can't replace the unit today, they can only put a $250.00 bandaid on it and will call to schedule the full repair.

So, TRANE warranties their equipment but not the cost to fix their lemons.

Trane's break NEW
by: M hitch

Lightning took out my original system that lasted 35 years. Installed a Trane 2012. Quit working after 2 years. Why? A known manufacturers defect. The aluminum core lines are made touching each other and after a couple years of vibration from the core one or both line break. Does trane cover this manufacturing known defect? Only the core. You are stuck paying the labor and refrigerant. Paid thousands for a new system and two years later have to pay over 500 to fix. Trane is crooked company praying off people who can't do without air conditioning and made the unfortunate choice of their brand. Please share with anyone you know.

do not buy a Trane if you want your home damaged NEW
by: Linda V

I pd 18,000 in 2006, to have a two unit installed, which was to be guanteed for 10 years.
well during installation, they put a drain pipe, that did not go anywhere, and soaked my floor and carpet for weeks, I thought my Grandkids had spilled water. carpet and floor had to be replaced, but the floor is still unlevel 7 yrs later. they said it would take 2 wks to install, well it took 2 and one-half months to complete, it ruined my whole summer. Well, now, the over flow pan had be leaking for weeks or months, and the dining room ceiling fell in with mildrew and the worst smell you can imagine, I am having to deal with this now, Trane needs to check out the dealers who are installing these system as these were not qualified and have damaged my home.

always broken
by: Anonymous in Naples Fla

I moved into my new home 4 yrs ago...with 5 new trane ac units. they are always needing repair...@ $600-$800 per repair. I am checking into the cost of replacing all of them with a reliable brand. They have known manufacturing defects which cause the leaks, but will not extend the warranty. Bad product...bad company.

Buy Any Brand But a Trane Hvac
by: M. Benson

We installed a new Trane heating and cooling system in 2003. Within the first year we had 5 service calls. The central air conditioning unit kept tripping the circuit breaker. Several faulty parts and wiring caused the issues.

In 2009, we woke to no power in the house. The compressors had overheated to the point that is tripped the main circuit breaker to the house. The repairman said we were lucky our house didn't burn down! Compressor was covered under warranty, but not the $600 in labor.

Plus the variable speed motor had to be replaced as well - another $315. In July, central air conditioner quit cooling. It needed to be recharged. Repairman thinks we may have an issue with the coil. Today the central air conditioner unit tripped the mail circuit breaker again.

It fried wiring in the central ac unit. Repairman said fuses within central air units should have prevented issue, but didn't. I hate my Trane! Will never buy another Trane Hvac system.

It Really Ain't That Hard To Stop A Trane
by: Martin R

Both compressors in my four year old two stage Trane central ac unit went out during 100 degree weather in Allen, Texas.

Trane did not have these very critical parts available for replacement, the story is "they are being manufactured at the factory" this is day 4 with no AC; they said the parts will "PROBABLY BE READY" on Thursday. We'll see.

They hide their customer service numbers, had to go through the Better Business Bureau website to find it.

All I can say is, don't do business with these people.
