Central air unit shuts off each day for several hours, regardless of temp and thermostat setting

Why is my central air conditioner unit shutting off each evening? It cuts off and will not restart until late at night, when the outside temp cools down - with no changes to the thermostat.

The electronics portion of the AC is located in our attic. We thought that it may be overheating, so installed a temperature activated attic fan. This did not help.

The central ac unit works great during the morning and mid afternoon while it is running. Just can't figure out what is making it short-out(?) and shut off each evening.

the A/C works fine in the morning till about 4to5 pm then doesn't work outside. We had AC man install new thermostat but that didn't fix the problem. The inside unit keep blowing air

I have a 1 month old carrier in the attic. It will run during the day at 75 degrees, but shuts off completely somewhere around 3pm and 4pm.Then house gets up to 79 degrees and you cant make the unit come on by switching no and off.Then after 2 or 3 hours it will come back on and cool the house. Now it only blows hot air after 3 weeks. I put 2 new thermostats and its the same thing happening. what is this

my air condition stops cooling between between 1-4 pm. I move the thermostat to the temp. on the therm. and it starts cooling again About 9pm it is o. k.

I'm having the same issue as one of the other posters. my new AC unit which is only two months old works fine during the day but shuts off around 1a in the morning and won't come on again until about 9am. The unit just clangs and clangs and clangs like it cannot get a start. I removed our smart thermostats and went back to older digital ones. This did not solve the problem. We do have roof solar, but never had this problem with our old unit. Coils are not freezing up, compressor is working, relay is working, AC technician cannot figure out what is going on.

My Amana unit will stop working, blowing cold air and this is intermittent. I traced the problem to either the capacitor or control circuit board. I replace the capacitor every 5years but the problem was in the circuit board overheating. Simple solution

My a/c blows warm air during day when it’s hottest outside but starts to blow real cold air around 8pm. Thermostat is set on 74 but gets up to 80 in afternoon. It works really well all night. Technician said it must be bad compressor. Why would it do this if compressor is bad?

For me, it was because my power company had an energy saver installed, that shut my ac off during peak hours. Literally took control and shut it off. Previous homeowner had installed it, and forgot to mention it.

Hi Joyce, We have similar issues and have spent $$ to have different HVAC certified people to take a look (unfortunately none of the do free consultation).

My hubby who is pretty handy himself, has maintained our HVAC thoroughly. He has also replaced the capacitor, thermostat and cleaned all pipes, air handler and what not.

Most of the HVAC people that came over didn't have to do a thing but they could not figure out what is wrong. There are no leaks, the level of refrigerant is good. We are at a lost ourselves.

I'm hoping we find someone who can answer.

Daughter has a CPI installed thermostat about a year ago. This summer the AC shits off around 2pm each day and doesn't come back on till after 8 pm. She has over $1,000 in AC service visits. No one can find any problems with her unit.

CPI came out to look at their thermostat and can verify they can't get the AC to run by adjusting their thermostat. Could it be a problem with their thermostat? They won't admit it might, won't change out their thermostat, just shake their heads and say they don't know.

She bought 2 new thermostats and is going to have them installed. If the AC works after installing the new thermostats then it's safe to say the problem has been and is CPI defective thermostats?

The compressor has a low pressure switch or internal safety switch. It would shuts off to protect the compressor from damage.

Had you have maintenance done on your central heating and air conditioning unit? It best to have local hvac tech look at it.

What if it is the outside unit that shuts down about the same time every night, thermostat continues to blow air. Then later in the evening the outside unit comes back on and blows cold air?

You are absolutely right. The overflow pan was filling up too much and causing the shut off switch to trigger. AC repairman said it would be quite expensive for him to fix the drainage issue. We've tried clearing the drain pipe ourselves - with minimal to moderate success and have now resorted to keeping an eye on it and using the shop vac when needed.

Without enough information. But let me suggest that the drain from the evaporator coil pan located in your attic may be plugged up. This unit set up should have a water overflow detection to shut down the operation of the AC before water run down your ceiling. Try to find and clear the drain hose from this unit and you may solve the problem.

When you said the central air conditioner shut off each evening. Is it the outdoor shut off or both indoor and outdoor unit shut off?

If the outdoor unit shut off. Does the outdoor fan run and not the compressor?
