Central Ac Unit Produce Loud Vibration

by peggy arado
(chesapeake, va)

Since day one in my new house, when the central air conditioner unit is running the wall in my living room vibrates and the sound coming from the wall is so deep and pulsating loud , it is ear piercing, you can't sit in my living room when it is on.

They have put a muffler and a vibration reduction thing on the outside unit which made the outside unit very quiet but the inside wall in my house is unbearable.

I have been told by the company who installed it, "some units are louder than others" Nothing we can do about it” This is a new house and new unit and I can't sit in my living room when the air is on. HELP!

Entire floor and slab vibrate in house. Started over last 2 years and have become worse. What’s worse is my mother and sister have tried to convince me it’s in my head and not their 16 yer old Rheam unit that has either the unit fan blade out of balance or the charge line has separated from the floor studs from the outside of the house all the way across the house to the unit on the opposite side of the house and said I need to go see a doctor due to my imagination causing mental problems. I’ve heard it all now.

AC Line between wall makes noise NEW
by: Anonymous

I have the same problem as TJ Lashin; that is the AC Line behind the wall makes a pulsating noise every time the AC turns on. The AC line goes between the wall in my bedroom and enters the house up in the attic. within the first 20 seconds, I can hear 20 taps. I can hear it louder when I put my ear against the sheet rock. It is not a problem during the day, but is really annoying at night. I tried to add some cushion at the line outside(where it enters the wall) and at the line inside my attic, but no use. So I guess instead of tearing out the sheet rock, replace the old line with a new one, but instead of going between the wall, just going outside the wall and enter at the eave into the attic. Any advice on this problem is appreciated. How much does it cost to replace 10 feet of AC line???

Condenser & evaporator vibration abatement NEW
by: T.J. Lashin

When HVAC units are installed correctly vibration should not be noticeable in your home. Most installations have the lines attached to the studs which causes the walls to become a sound box. To abate the problem, try using Parker Zoomline or Rtectorseal. The flex tubing is made for HVAC and isolates either the Condenser or Evaporator. Hopes this helps.

It's your blower motor or blower fan that is causing issues. They are either out of balance and wobbling, or defective

Extremely loud vibration - solved for me NEW
by: Anonymous

You could hear our unit across the house yet every time I went outside the unit was dead silent. Looked at all these forums to get deeper and suddenly decided to look at a wall outlet in my dining room inside on the other side of the wall where the AC unit is outside.

The ac unit was actually vibrating my wall outlet inside and loosened up my wall plate just enough that the extremely loud buzzing humming sound was just the wall outlet cover loose and vibrating against the wall. I can not believe how loud that was for being a plastic wall outlet cover but tightening the screw fixed it all and my house is dead silent. Just another option to explore for some

Almost paid someone to come look at this

Vibrating Central AC NEW
by: CaptainTom

Had he same vibrating sound and feeling of vibration.

Turns out it was a combination of: 1)a blower motor that was worn and the shaft wobbled. 2) the same was true of the blower fan which was wobbling. Both probably were going bad over time but finally both were so out of line that they caused my very intense vibration.

Replaced the blower motor and fan and all is back to pleasant quiet. Replacement basically was easy but the confined space of my attic mad for a very cumbersome job

did you resolve problem NEW
by: Anonymous

I have the same problem. My neighbors new central air makes it impossible for me to use half my house. Writing you to see if you solved your problem.

There is a distance of 7.5 feet between my neighbors home and my home. For many years my neighbor has had his central air unit located between our homes and their has been no issue with sound inside my home. However, my neighbor just replaced his old broken air conditioner with a new one. My neighbors old air conditioner unit was mounted on his brick wall using a metal bracket. When the new unit was being installed the old metal wall brackets where not changed. The new air conditioiner unit is much smaller and does not fit properly on the old brackets. Instead of installing a new wall bracket for the new unit the installers put a concrete patio stone on the base of the old metal wall bracket. Now the new unit sits on the patio stone within the parameter of the old metal wall bracket.

The problem is .... in my home I now hear my neighbors air conditioner running. The sound is a low frequency vibration/whomp whomp whomp noise. I hear this noise on the entire side of my home and find it almost impossible on some days to be in the same room.

I told my neighbor of the problem and offered to help pay to fix it. Would you sell anything I could purchase to fix this? I'm desperate to get this resolved!

The only thing I tried was placing some sound insulating pads under the feet of the unit. You can see these pads in the attached photos.

new (2016) Bryant Legacy is noisy also NEW
by: Anonymous

We just had a Bryant Legacy A/C unit installed 6 weeks ago (May, 2016), outside the master bedroom. The condenser has a vibrating, humming sound and that sound seems amplified in the bedroom. After many complaints and service tech. visits to install a sound blanket, condenser line weights, etc. the noise is still there, mostly when the unit is in dehumidifying mode. The sound wakes me up at night.
The installers are coming out this Friday to install a different model Bryant unit. We'll see if that is any different-sure hope so!
Seems like we're giving up peace and quiet for cool air. Unbelievable! Someone tell Bryant to do better!

Horton home in Jacobs Reserve NEW
by: Anonymous

Purchasing a new home in Jacobs Reserve, TX and noticed on my 4th visit to the 2015 home a loud vibration in the floor and walls from the AC ex changer outside the MB wall. Had a dual zone CA home for many years and never felt any vibration near or on adjacent walls to the units.

This has just started in the new home and we haven't moved in yet.

Any thoughts or similar problems?

Thanks.

had a Reem all in one unit installed 3 weeks ago. it was placed on the same pad in the same spot that the 30 year old unit, which was quiet conked out. the new units vibration noise is resignating thru the whole house but you can actually track it by volume getting louder as you aproach the corner wall it's closest too. you can also feel the vibration with your hand on the unit. the installer has sent different people out twice, the last one took photos of unit and placement and would have to go back to get advice.

4/25/14: Hohler Furnace &Sheet Metal from Sandusky, Ohio, completed install of Bryant 113ANA Legacy, 13 SEER Air'Conditioner, it is 6/18/14, 90 degrees, and the system froze up. This is the second, AC unit installed in basement, first one was cracked, water leaked all over on day 1 of use. There is a disgusting vibration when it runs, that wakes me up, and keeps me up. The repair person is coming in the a.m. With the new furnace, air purifier, humidifier a hot water tank, we have paid over $7000.000. These are my comments. SHAME ON YOU Bryant Heating and Cooling Systems. Where is your quality control? Obviously there is none.

Noise unbearable NEW
by: Anonymous

There is a piece of metal on the top plate of the stud wall where the AC lines pass thru. I may climb up and pull it out. Hoping to stop some of the noise. OR move unit to wall out side of bathroom. Where I think it should be. There should be some kind of code, on where to locate outside units.

Noisy Air Conditioner
by: Anonymous (above)

This sounds like my exact problem! I have done everything else, compressor sound blanket, sound wall, etc. Still having lots of noise/vibration on/in condenser wall (bedroom)reading 74decib at bed head board. I am prepared to remove sheetrock and insulate pipes properly - can you advise what proper insulating (noise isolation) would be?

thanks DGK

noise
by: Best In The West A/C

The problem does not sound like a unit problem.
If the unit is a package unit on the roof then it could be the installer did something improper or if it is a split system then it could be the freon lines running thru the wall going to the furnace and should be rerun. I dont think the unit is entirely to blame.

Noisy Air Conditioner
by: Anonymous

I don't know if this has been adressed, but the interconnecting lines between the condenser outside and evaporator coil inside, are mechanically connected to carry the refrigerant. Many installers connect these lines to the studs in your wall, creating a sounding board for the copressor into your home. Some insulators spray foam insulation in the walls, burying the lines in a rigid foam bed which enhances the noise even further. You could take any recent model condensing unit and connect it to those lines and you'll get the same result. The noise is coming from the lines. (I have experience with this). Unfortunately the solution will require you to enter the walls from the inside (cutting the sheetrock) and properly isolating the lines from your walls. Or you could run new lines on the outside of your house. The new compressors (Scroll type) run rougher than the older piston type, and make more viabrations. It was possible to get by away with connecting the lines to the walls with the older units and get by with it. I hope this helps.

Vibrations Evolutions system
by: Anonymous

I had my evolution system installed on 5/20/2010. I must say the furnace so far has been so quiet that we don't know when it is on. The central air conditioner is by far the nosiest I have ever heard. The vibration can be heard inside and outside; the ground around the outside unit actually shakes. My old (28 years old) unit made half the noise and had no vibration. Bryant has changed the unit and this second unit is just as nosier.

Bryant has sent two of their representatives at different times to look at it and so far nobody knows why this problem exists or how to fix it. My installer is besides himself for answered and has spent many hours coming back to try something else, yesterday (Sunday he came to put some other parts that the factory sent him after installing these parts the results are the same, vibrations. You can't go into our finished basement because the noise is so loud; this is where our Grand Children used to play.

I must say that everyone from Bryant has an honest desire to solve this problem, but they seem to be on a fishing trip to find the solution. Most of their comments however have been "We have never had a problem with this unit and have put thousands out without a vibration problem." Never is a powerful word, but doesn't fix the problem, especially when I have gotten units in that have the same problem???? Makes one wonder what is really going on.

I was also told that the first Unit that was sent back looked like it was dropped somewhere in transit either to my installer or from my installer. Again Two units dropped sent to the same customer then having the same problem, must be the power of coincidence ???????????? I am now waiting to see if anyone is coming today to do anything, we are going into our 8th week, and are no closer to the end.

My only consolation is that I haven't paid for this yet, I wanted to pay when the furnace was put in but my installer said to wait till the job was done which I am now doing, I feel bad for my installer because hasn't received a Dime. If anyone has any ideas E-Mail me at JGVisco@yahoo.com I was also told that they may step me up to the 180B unit, I now have the 187B. Well we'll see...

Is This Package Units?
by: Dadan

Some compressors are really quiet; however, the sound it produces hurt your eardrum.

Is this package unit?

If this is split units, there are two copper tubes that is connect to the indoor evaporator coils. Could that cause the vibration? (I find that hard to believe)

I don't see how a condenser could cause a vibration in your living room. Condenser unit are not even attach to the exterior wall.

Had the technician checks the indoor component (ex. blower)?

If the technician couldn't solves the problem. I doubt I could do it over the Internet.
