I live in Texas, and my home is about 28,000 sq ft running on one Lennox 4 ton central air conditioner unit and approximately four years old. I think i have at least 2 summers in which 1 the fan locked up, and now the third summer compressor went out
I seriously doubt you have a 28,000sqft house. If it were 2,800 sqft a 4ton AC unit would be woefully inefficient! There are 2 charts used to calculate the requirement of an AC unit in a home. The old chart suggests 500 sqft/ton and the newer chart that deems the newer units to be more efficient that suggests 600 sqft/ton. If you fall in the middle it is better to be 50% under than 50% over as the unit will not perform as well on having too much tonage. If you ARE IN 28,000 sqft you are not even making a dent! For 2,800 sqft a 5 ton unit would be the correct size.
