Keep 3/4 Lineset Going From 3 to 3.5 ton HVAC Unit

by Eric
(NW Georgia)

April 9, 2011

We are preparing to replace our Lennox 3-ton with an Amana 3.5-ton due to condenser fan over-temp failure, a slow freon leak and the air handler blower is about to go (bearings sound bad).

HVAC contractor claims he can reuse 3/4 lineset (with a flush kit to use R410A) to save a couple hundred dollars instead of upsizing it to 7/8.

Line-set length is 30-35' (~16' up and ~16' horizontal). Should I be concerned about affecting unit performance, lifespan, or warranty going this way? Contractor claims to have verified this is OK with his Amana dealer. Any thoughts at all will be appreciated.
