Condensor Unit Keeps Blowing Fuses

by norbert
(rochester, mi)

After replacing a fuse the unit may run for a few hours before blowing another fuse or could take several days. had a repair technician come look at the unit he said the compressor had a short to ground. The unit still cools when running (note compressor and condenser fan are separate motors). Being a EE this does not make sense to me. If the compressor motor has a shorted winding it should not start or run at all.

The first thing that he wanted was to sell a complete new unit.

Trip Breaker
by: Anonymous

A compressor that is short to ground will always blow fuse, whenever you turn the central ac unit on. The fuse has a specific ampere on it. The fuse prevents the condenser unit to pull in too much current and that is why it trips the breaker.

There are times when homeowner trying DIY work and put in the wrong fuse for central ac unit. The fuse for central ac unit is time delay fuse. Each HVAC unit will have its own amp.

Similar Problem!
by: Anonymous

Mine is doing the same - blowing the outside fuses once every two weeks or so. Everything seems fine during the time in between. Filter is clean, electrical connections seem good. It happened once last year, and three times in the last two months (it has been an awful heat wave here in SW Michigan). It is a Bryant unit - about 13 years old. I will watch your post to see if someone can offer advice.
