Central Ac Unit Keeps Quiting

My ac unit outside will shut off without warning. It will run fine for a day or 2 and then without warning the unit wont come on at all but the air handler will. Sometimes after 15 minutes it will work again other times it takes hours. Sometimes I have to run water over the unit even though the coils are completely clean. Does this mean the compressor is going bad?
